Love Flying Revolution Kites, Not Your Parents Kite for sure

Revolution Kites Revolution Quad Kite

Even the experienced Kite Flyer, like this author, loves the challenge of a new type of kite. These Revolution Kites, provide this challenge and then some! Flying a Revolution Quad Kite is an absolute blast and I love it. Yet, learning to fly one required me to forget almost everything I’ve learned when flying two-line stunt kites. But Hey, its all fun and at the end of the day, it was well worth the time it took!

The Kite Selected

Now doubt, there is a lot to learn when it comes to flying a quad line kite. The first being, selecting a first kite where you it can used to learn with, but also be one that can advance you into next steps easily. In my research, I decided to start my Quad experience with the most recognized name in the Industry, Revolution Kites. As with all quality built kites, a Revolution Quad Kite can be expensive, but you do get what you pay for here. In the end, I selected a beginner kite, called the EXP Sport and is this articles title image.

Training Available

From my many posts on flying kites, you can see I love to fly two-line stunt. Well while reading the ‘getting started’ literature of my new Exp Revolution Quad Kite, I noticed a ‘typical things that go wrong’ sentence that said, DO Not Fly A Quad Kite the Same Way You do a Two Line Kite. Great, this is gonna be a problem! No worries, Revolution Kites has an incredible training program and set of videos that get you up and running quickly. It is called Club-38, and its designed to go from beginner to advanced. It is this authors intent to progress through their entire training series over time.

The Basics

Found many resources and though they may differ slightly on flying skill form, the one key area which is agreed on is how to hold the handles. Take a look at the video below and notice the importance of the grip, the thumb position, and the need to freely rotate about the thumb. This is the most important part of the basics.

Once you get into the air vertically, you will come to learn what moves the kite. In simplest of terms:

  • Keep all 4 lines independently tight. Very little slack.
  • Pulling on the tops of the handles slightly, in bursts, causes the kite to go up.
  • Pulling on the bottom of the handles slightly, in bursts, causes the kite to go down.
  • Consequently, pulling the top of the handles, in unison, will make it go straight up and vice versa, pulling down will cause the flyer to go straight down.
  • As expected then, a slight pull on either bottom handle, in a burst, will send the kite into that direction.

The difference between Quad Line and Two Line

Will keep this section brief. The main difference in flying a Revolution Quad Kite and a Two Line kite is how to steer. In a two-line, you pull continuously in the direction you want to go. In a quad, you bump or burst, the bottom line handle in the direction you want to go. You DO NOT keep pulling, you bump and let off. The Quad is about finesse, the Two-line is about the force! It takes practice to get use to it, but is so worth it!

Possibilities are endless!

Hands down, this is my new favorite stunt kite, with a disclaimer of course! The Quad Line Revolution Kites are all about maneuverability, which is what I love about them. It will take many hours of practice to master each level of expertise and this is what excites me! However, nothing can replace the exhilaration of the hard-pull of a two-line power kite.

Here is a video of my new found interest and several images as well.
