The S500 Drone Build Chassis and Motors

s500 drone build

Everything starts at the beginning, or at least it should! For our fully autonomous, open source autopilot controlled drone based around the S500 multi rotor air frame, it starts here. This S500 Drone Build article will only contain the info needed to build up the frame and install the motors. The ESC’s will now be documented in Electronics article to follow.

The Build

No need to re-invent the wheel here. There is a multitude of videos out there to walk the builder through the S500 Drone Build Chassis Assembly Process. In selecting the right one to share here, Simple to Follow and Hardware Organization detail was the most important criteria.

  • When unpacking the setup, pay close attention to the screw lengths and keep them separate and organized at all times.
  • The Arms were assembled completely to the chassis, however, they will be removed and/or loosened when installing the ESC’s later in the build.
  • Motor’s were installed for reference only is this section. More information on motor location, polarity, etc for this S500 Drone Build will follow.

This Video, by Unmanned Tech, will walk you through the entire process, end to end.

Key Takeaways

The build is very easy, very straight forward. Do not over tighten anything at this point, keep snug but loose.

Our S500 Drone Build Chassis

Below are several photos showing our completed chassis, ready for Battery, ESC and misc Power Items to be fitted and installed. These first two images show the chassis itself. Interesting enough, with it sitting on the Tech Tools 17″ X 23″ build/cutting mat, you can easily see the 21″ Diagonal Tip to Tip Span this S500 Drone Build Chassis will have, excluding blades.
